Are you one of those parents who hurried to buy a house in a quiet suburb so that your kids have a better childhood? It amazes me just how many families fall into this silly trap. Let’s stop and think for a moment, shall we? What exactly spells quality in a place where the only nearby cultural venues are shopping malls, chain food restaurants and Gymboree?
Faced with a lack of stimuli, kids bored out of their mind resort to perusing malls, drinking way too much, having sex, taking drugs and making up arbitrary popularity contests.
These kids have no semblance of independence at least until they are old enough to get their driver’s license. That can also be attributed to the fact that suburban parents are so bored with their own lives, that they vicariously live life through micromanaging their children. As far as safety is concerned, suburban schools definitely have nothing to brag about either - with frustrated kids going on rampant shooting sprees plastering headlines constantly.
Yes, there’s bad stuff going on in cities too, but at least you and your kids can find something to do without making an annual family trip out of it.
